Havering Cyclists is a firm supporter of the 20sPlenty campaign, which advocates for 20mph to be the default speed limit on residential and urban streets. This aligns with our broader goals of making Havering’s streets safer and more inviting for cyclists and pedestrians.
In the absence of a segregated cycle network in Havering, we think this would go a long way towards making cycling safer in the borough.
About 20sPlenty
- 20’s Plenty for Us is a not-for-profit organisation that was formed in 2007 and now has hundreds of local campaigns across the UK but sadly, not yet in Havering.
- They campaign for a speed limit of 20mph on streets where people and motor vehicles mix so as to help communities to make their streets, towns and villages better places to be. They do not represent a particular sector of society or mode of transport.
Benefits of Reduced Speed Limits
- Improved road safety: Lower speeds reduces the number and severity of collisions.
- Reduced emissions: Smoother traffic flow at lower speeds can decrease vehicle emissions especially from brakes and tyres.
- Better for public health: Calmer roads encourage more walking and cycling, leading to healthier, more active communities.
- Improved environment: Quieter streets foster a more neighbourly and pleasant atmosphere.
The Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (formerly Sustrans) have a compelling case for lower speed limits spelled out HERE.
