Havering Cyclists News

Hello fellow cyclist! With the blistering heat of what might well prove to be the coolest summer of the rest of our lives now behind us, I hope you’re enjoying getting out on your bike riding for work, shopping or for some exercise but meanwhile, Havering Cyclists have still been campaigning and raising local cycling issues. Please read on for details.

LONDON FESTIVAL OF CYCLING
We ran a successful family ride from Hornchurch Country Park to the River Thames celebrate the day stopping off at the lovely Rainham Hall for coffee. Havering Council played their part by engaging Cycle Confident to run a Dr Bike in support. Thanks to all those who took part and made it a day to remember!

NCN136 THROUGH PAGES WOOD
You may recall that we had secured a change of route to the OS map so that the signage could be amended and replaced where missing. Well the new signs were procured by Havering Council and these are now being installed by Forestry England, a task which has involved installing some new signposts.

INGREBOURNE BRIDGE IN GAYNES PARKWAY
The access to this bridge which forms part of NCN136 has been subsiding for some time. We reported it’s further deterioration in August and we just got the update that the bridge will have to be closed while they make repairs and so because the bridge is used to access Branfil School, the work will be done during the school’s half-term holiday at the end of October.

DARTFORD CROSSING CYCLE SERVICE
You may recall that we had raised concerns about the closure of the cycle path beside the A282 to access the Dartford Crossing transfer service. National Highways have now arranged with Thurrock Council for a revised on-road route via Weston Avenue to be signed that connects NCN13 with the new location of the control point. This is not the solution that we were hoping for but as this is outside of Havering and London, we have few levels of influence.

LOCAL ELECTIONS MAY 2026
We saw Reform UK take control of Havering Council and while the party nationally has made some worrying statements about removing active travel measures, we are still waiting to see what Havering’s new administration will do. We have made approaches to the new leadership for discussions but as yet, we are still waiting for a meaningful response.

HAVERING ACTIVE TRAVEL STRATEGY We wait to see if the new administration will honour the Active Travel Strategy that took so much effort to develop.

MARSH WAY IMPROVEMENTS
We still wait news on whether this project to provide a section of segregated cycle path on Marsh Way on the railway bridge and to give much improved access to the CEME centre and surrounding industrial will be progressing anytime soon though the funding allocation and consultation have long been completed. This is an important improvement that we have been pushing for since the tragic deaths of two cyclists in 2021.

CYCLE PARKING UPGRADE
We have seen a number of the existing cycle stands replaced and in some cases resited as part of a review that took place over the past year.

FUTURE EVENTS
Sadly we were unable to secure further funding to run cycle maintenance training going forwards but we have run a series of Dr Bike events through the summer which are coming to an end now for the season. We will still be doing “coffee rides” for members to inspect sections of cycle route and we hope to do another social evening in November. Please let us know if you would like to be informed about these events.
