Havering Cyclists News

Greetings fellow cyclist! With the winter weather seeming to dragging on, I hope you’ve still been able to get out on your bike in the fresh air riding for work, shopping or for some exercise but meanwhile, Havering Cyclists have still been campaigning and raising local cycling issues. Please read on for details.

BARRIERS AT CELY WOODS New barriers had been recently installed at the entrances to Cely Woods that would prevent all but the most agile of cyclist from entering the area. We arranged a site meeting with representatives of Forestry England who say that they need to take measures to keep out trespassers on motor bikes and quad bikes but they have agreed to modify the barriers to make them comply with British Standards.

REMEDIAL ACTIONS WITH HAVERING COUNCIL We have been following up on our list of outstanding cycle safety issues with Havering council and have now resorted to raising formal complaints about three of the issues – The missing speed humps in Marshalls Drive, the faulty ramp at Rainham Marshes and the wrongly installed rumble strips. We have had acknowledgements and await further news.

HAVERING CLIMATE COALITION We have joined forces with local groups from Friends of the Earth, XR and the Quakers to form the “Havering Climate Coalition” to specifically call on Havering council for a more meaningful climate action plan and also to press for action on wider climate issues such as air pollution. Please let us know if you would like to get involved.

MISSING SIGNAGE We had reported the sign that went missingon NCN136 at the junction of Elgin Avenue and Thurso Close and we are now told that replacement signage is on order and it should be installed by April. If you notice any other missing signage in the borough, please either report it yourself using the council’s online tool or let us know.

LOCAL ELECTIONS 2022 You might recall that we have been working on “Five Asks” that we will put to all the prospective candidates for the local elections in May. We think we have them about right now so we need to be thinking abut how we can engage with prospective councilors and convince them of their value. There will also be an email tool available soon that will allow supporters to send emails directly to candidates asking them to commit to our Asks.

EVENTS We expect to restart our monthly Dr Bike events in Hornchurch Country Park along with some family rides. Please get in touch if you are interested in either helping or joining in.
