Havering Cyclists News

Hello fellow cyclist! With summer now almost over, I hope you’re enjoying getting out on your bike riding for work, shopping or for some exercise but meanwhile, Havering Cyclists have still been campaigning and raising local cycling issues.

Eastern Road Cycle Scheme
We were delighted that the work to address this dangerous and long-standing gap in London Cycle Network route 12 (LCN12) between Havana Close and Eastern Road across South Street was completed and we were pleased that Cllr Barry Mugglestone who is Cabinet Member for the Environment met us to celebrate the opening. This was a long struggle but the outcome was well worth it and we are grateful to Havering Council for making it happen.
Progress on Marsh Way
We understand that plans are in progress to provide a section of segregated cycle path on Marsh Way on the railway bridge which will give much improved access to the CEME centre and surrounding industrial parks and further improvements are included further along Marsh Way. The work is expected to be completed by March 2026. This is an important improvement that we have been pushing for since the tragic deaths of two cyclists in 2021.
Harold Wood to Brentwood Cycle Route
As part of the M25 Junction 28 improvement plans, significant improvements are under way to link LCN12 and NCN136 eastwards along Colchester Road (A12) across the M25 and on to Brook Street, Brentwood. We have been assured that the cycle route will be in place before the motorway junction improvements are finalised.
Reviews of LCN12 and NCN136
Our earlier reported list of issues arising from our inspection rides is still being progressed by council officers and a further inspection of NCN136 (South) in July has revealed more issues. A report has been submitted to council officers and we await news.
Re-Cycle Bike Donations
You may recall that we are now a drop-off point for Re-Cycle which is a scheme that sends donated bikes to Africa for reuse and we have so far sent one batch of donated cycles and have another building. If you have a bike that is no longer needed, please get in touch and we will find it a good home.
Active Travel Forum
The first of the council’s new Active Travel Forum events took place in July and a schedule of future meetings has been established. We are pleased to see that the new forum is supported by the attendance of the responsible Cabinet Member and we are hopeful that more progress can be made.
Hornchurch Station Parking
The plans to provide two secure cycle parking lockers at Hornchurch Station are still in progress with questions over ownership of maintenance responsibilities now being worked on.
London Freecycle
As usual, Havering Cyclists ran a feeder ride in May to enable people to reach the closed off streets of Central London for this year’s Freecycle event.
Free Cycle Maintenance Training
This summer, Havering Cyclists teamed up with The Friends of Ingrebourne Valley and Hornchurch Country Park, TfL and YoungAgain Cycles to arrange a series of basic and advanced cycle maintenance classes. The remaining events this year are now fully booked but we hope to be able to run more next year.
Summer Events
Our Dr Bike events have again been under way and we have run information stands at selected community events.
