Havering Cyclists News: August

Greetings fellow cyclists! With the summer weather being quite unpredictable, I hope you’ve still been able to get out on your bike in the fresh air riding for work, errands or for some exercise but meanwhile, Havering Cyclists have still been campaigning and raising local cycling issues. Please read on for details.

REMEDIAL ACTIONS WITH HAVERING COUNCIL
We have been following up on our list of outstanding cycle safety issues with Havering council and while we have had updates we are still waiting for details of when each of them will be resolved. The list includes including rumble strips, action on Marsh Way and missing speed humps.

LOWER THAMES CROSSING
The plans for the Lower Thames Crossing have been resubmitted and are out for public consultation. Given the climate crisis, we believe that by the time the work is completed, we ought to have cut our vehicle use so that it is not required but the government seems set to press on. On the plans, our main concern is that the south path on the A127 at Cranham will be cut off at the M25 and that a shared-use bridge previously promised to mitigate this has been dropped. We will be responding to the plans and would ask that you do too. https://ltcconsultation.highwaysengland.co.uk/

RESURFACING AT MERCURY GARDENS
After several failed attempts to have the council reinstate cycle facilities to the latest standards following resurfacing, we are pleased to announce that the painted cycle lanes on the Ring Road at Mercury Gardens have indeed been correctly reinstated.
Well done Havering Council!

UPCOMING PROTEST RIDES
It has been a year since we supported XR Havering with the LET HAVERING CYCLE ride to the town hall. We will be supporting them again with an anniversary ride on the 11th September. We hope that you can join us.
The tragic death of yet another cyclist at Holborn Gyratory cannot go unmarked. LCC is organizing a protest ride on the 8th September. Please keep a look out for more details.

CYCLE BUDDIES SCHEME
Our buddying scheme has been operating for some months now and a number of new riders have already been helped. If you or anybody that you know would be interested in becoming either a Helper Buddy or a New Rider Buddy, please check our website at https://www.haveringcyclists.org/cycle-buddies/ .

A CYCLING CHARTER FOR HAVERING
Our plans to launch the charter were scuppered by the pandemic but we are now rebuilding the momentum. Our plan is to sign up as many local organisations as we can before engaging with the public so if you have any business or community contacts that we could approach to further this, please get in touch and you can see the charter and sign up at www.haveringcyclingcharter.org.

DOCTOR BIKE
With the easing of lockdown and the bedding in of new event regulations, we have been able to restart our Dr Bike events in Hornchurch Country Park with the next one being at the end of August. Please feel free to bring your bike along for a check and if you can help in either a technical or a non-technical way, please let us know.
COULD YOU BE A CLIMATE CHAMPION FOR HAVERING?
The London Cycling Campaign has a number of volunteers posts to fill in the role of Climate Safe Street Champions for each borough. They have candidates for most boroughs but none as yet for Havering. Would you be interested in taking this on? The minimum time commitment would be three evenings per month. Here are more details: https://hr.breathehr.com/recruitment/vacancies/17529?identifier=londoncyclingcampaign
