Havering Cyclists News: June 2021

Greetings fellow cyclists!

With the gradual lifting of Covid lockdown, I hope you’ve been able to get out on your bike in the fresh air riding for work, errands or for some exercise but meanwhile, Havering Cyclists have still been campaigning and raising local cycling issues. Please read on for details.

REMEDIAL ACTIONS WITH HAVERING COUNCIL

We have been following up on our list of outstanding cycle safety issues with Havering council and have been promised full updates very shortly. The list includes including rumble strips, action on Marsh Way and missing speed humps.

CHICANES DANGER TO CYCLISTS

You may be aware that two new chicanes or “Lateral Deflection” traffic calming devices had been installed in North Ockenden. These, and the older installations in Havering-atte-Bower, are a problem because drivers are tempted to save a bit of time by failing to yield to the oncoming cyclists’ right of way, which obviously puts us in danger. We have asked the traffic planning team to consider how they might be made safer and for no further devices of this type to be deployed.

LOWER THAMES CROSSING

We were pleased to learn that as part of the LTC scheme, a cycle route is to be deployed between Harold Hill and Brentwood along the A12.

TOUCAN CROSSING AT WATERLOO ROAD

Local councilors seemed delighted to unveil the new toucan crossing of Waterloo Road after eight years of planning. While accepting that there have been some issues to overcome, the result after all this time is quite disappointing. From missing dropped kerbs to gantry posts blocking the path. We have submitted a list of defects to the council that need to be addressed.

CYCLE BUDDIES SCHEME

We are pleased to say that our new buddying scheme is now operating and a number of new riders have already been helped. If you or anybody that you know would be interested in becoming either a Helper Buddy or a New Rider Buddy, please check our website at https://www.haveringcyclists.org/cycle-buddies/ .

HAVERING CYCLISTS ROUTE PRIORITIES

Our list of preferred cycle routes has been reviewed and now shared with local councilors. If you have views on what you’d like to see, please get in touch and we will send you the list for you to review and to add your two penn’orth.
